we are trying to decide on a few details in our new house, and i would love to get
YOUR opinions on things! (my husband and i have had some discussions on what
to include on the house, and what to omit...)
will you p-l-e-a-s-e, please take a minute to fill it out?
thanks a ton!
These questions were fun to answer. Will you please let us know what everyone else said? I'm totally curious!
ReplyDeleteThanks!

definitely! i am going to wait until monday or tuesday to collect and analyze the results and then i will write a post on the results.
DeleteI answered the questions according to my family and our needs. But honestly, I could have answered "it depends," to nearly every question. It depends on your family and your needs. I have little kids that like to bathe in our big master bath. Our family rarely watches movies and would not use a media room but every one in awhile. We don't have pets that could potentially scratch a wood floor. I use our double ovens about once a year because I'm not a big cook. So my suggestion (and you know this better than most having been through this process a few times now) is to just consider your family needs and build to fit. Good luck! I'm excited to see to process!
ReplyDeletei totally agree. i know what i want and what is important to me, but my husband and i are always talking about resale and what other people want. i kinda feel like our other houses were built with resale specifically in mind, and i would rather have what works for ME in this house....but i also don't want to do something that would prohibit others from buying the house. i agree that it really is about what WE need...
DeleteAll I know is that one of my "must haves" for my next house is a larger laundry room, with a sink. Even if it's just a small sink!
ReplyDeleteOur house has a microwave/convection oven in addition to the regular oven. I love that I can have extra oven space when entertaining, but I think that two full-sized ovens are a waste.
ReplyDeleteSome thoughts from our house...I would gladly trade two sinks for one in the master bathroom for some drawer space in the vanity...Go with one large closet in the master, if he doesn't have a lot of clothes and she does, hers will always be full and his will seem empty assuming they are similar size...Our entire first floor is wood flooring (with the exception of the back entry) including the kitchen. I love the seamless look of it and the rooms flow together nicely. However, when we first moved in, our "new" refrigerator leaked where the ice maker attached to the water line. We did not know this for several weeks. When we finally figured it out, the wood and some of the drywall were already damaged. It was a mess to repair.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this. Our wood floor in front of /under our fridge is warped because of our kids using the water dispenser in the front of it. I would do tile next time.
Deletetotally agree with everything! i love the look of hardwood everywhere. i know that warming could be an issue with leaking appliances, but if you have a major leak, its going to do a lot of damage--even if you opt for tile! great feedback! thank you!
DeleteThat's why laminate wood floors are genius. You can get the look of hardwood without the maintenance
DeleteI answered all the questions but I agree that "it depends", specially considering the target population for the neighborhood your house is at. We, for instance live at an area with no schools close by, so most residents are "empty nesters " or retirees, features like bunk rooms and designated home theater would be probably unnecessary. In this specific neighborhood having a designated Gym space is a must though.
ReplyDeleteIf you can afford it, QUARTZITE counter tops.
ReplyDeleteWe have granite, the mottled brown/beige variety, in our kitchen. I hate it. Everyone thinks that hiding messes is good, but I have to actually run my bare hand over the stone as I'm wiping up to make sure I got everything. I'd much rather have a counter top that shows the crud so that I can make sure it's clean more easily.
such great feedback. i have to admit that i am partial to natural stone, but i agree that i want a more simple, less mottled looking stone. if budget will allow, i will definitely look into quartzite.
DeleteFor me, it's not about hiding mess. It's about heat resistance. I can (and have for almost 20 years) put hot-from-the-oven pans right on my granite counters--which I don't seal, btw--and they still look new. Can Quartzite stand up to high heat, or does the resin holding it together limit that?
DeleteI does all depend on your needs, although I wish we had put in two sinks in our masterbath. Two medicine cabinets means more storage and less on the counter.
ReplyDeletei agree that two sinks are optimal, but we may not have room...and if push comes to shove, i would opt for one sink and more storage. great feedback!
DeleteI put those flip out sink front trays in our bathroom. They hold toothpaste and floss. I'd do two sinks, a taller cabinet, and put shallow storage somewhere else--Kohler displayed a floor to ceiling medicine cabinet, which I thought was genius, although *I* might not want a floor to ceiling mirror in the bathroom!
DeleteYes, Please post the results! I would love to know! You are great, thanks for the emails, we all love what you do!
ReplyDeleteI agree, microwave convection acting as the second oven is a great second oven. I particularly like having a smaller oven that heats up quickly. Every house needs a tub but those gigantic ones are well, tacky. They are a pain to clean, use too much hot water and remind me of those Paul Bunion sofas. I adore the tiles that mimick hardwood.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see the results!
ReplyDeleteWe just built a house and are closing this week after a long wait! Our realtor gave us a few really good tips in deciding what to include: what will give the best ROI (return on investment), what will appeal to the largest demographic, and keep the options within the range of the nearby market i.e. don't go so custom you won't ever be able to sell the house.
ReplyDeleteWe ultimately decided on rock exterior, thats what the HOA required, sink in laundry, laminate hardwood floors throughout the main (sticking to one flooring throughout is easier to sell), double vanities in the master, a separate tub and shower in master, a door from bedroom to the ensuite, single walk in closet, single oven. We wanted to stay in the lower end of the price ranges of our neighborhood but also have nice features. Good luck deciding
PS your lot looks strikingly similar to one we looked at in Traverse Mountain...
ReplyDeleteIf you choose to go with granite, have it honed (?) so it's not shiny
ReplyDeleteand looks like quartz for a fraction of the price.
PS: Kudos to the two ovens, one convection and the other a regular oven. You could also add a microwave drawer in the island or a space for a regular microwave there.
