survey results

thank you to everyone who took the time out to fill out my survey!
it was a tremendous help! a special thank you to all of you who commented on the post, to let me know some more details about your thoughts. i REALLY appreciated every single comment!
here are the results:

**i was SO glad to see this! i thought for sure that people might get freaked out by not having double ovens. you see,  in order to get some more cabinet and counter space, i am opting to forgo double ovens. i would love to get a commercial style range with a nice large oven... after all of the comments, i am also considering getting a microwave/convection oven combo. (great idea! thanks!)

**perfect. we are putting in both, but the tub is not going to be a swimming pool....just a nice, decent sized jet-less tub.
**just wondering. i thought it might be a fun idea to sneak one in upstairs somewhere if we had the room. i think we would use it a few times a year, but it could be a fun use of an otherwise "dead" space.
 ** i agree. a must.
**good choice! that is what we are leaning towards. brick in the south was SO much cheaper than stone, but out here, it is more! so, we are thinking of using stone. i have always loved stone houses.

**ooo. almost a 3-way tie! i thought we were only going to have room for reach-ins, but after seeing some sketches form the architect, it looks like we might get separate closets!

**can i just say that i was MOST surprised by the answers to this question? i TOTALLY feel like home theaters are a little "over", but i thought i was the only one! it is SOOO great to see that others feel the same way i do!
**well. i totally think that they are a waste of space. but apparently, a lot of you are much better at doing laundry than me! :)
**yep. hardwood. you can't beat hardwood, in my opinion. i have had tile, stone, laminate and wood, and i have liked wood the best.

**i think we are going to opt for one! i know, i know....totally against the norm, but we have had double sinks in almost every house we have lived in, and we always use the same sink. i would rather have some more storage and only one sink to clean than to get two sinks just because i am "supposed" to.

thanks again for filling out the survey! i am probably going to be doing other post begging your opinions! i have SO many decisions to make in the next few months, and i can't wait to share them with you all.

? what about the results surprised you? anything? were your answers among the majority?

  1. I loved everything about this post, especially seeing the results. Very interesting to see where my answers fell. I was surprised by the bunk room ... I have two teenage daughters and that room would be full at least two weekends a month!!

  3. I think the closet tie is funny, they all basically say we all would LOVE more space in our closet however it happens!

  4. Just have to say, there has been an ongoing debate at my house about the sink in the laundry room. I read your question to my husband, because I use it a a "utility sink" for paint brushes exclusively, while he seems to think it is for laundry!

Also, we used to laugh at all the people on house hunters who said a single sink in the master bath was a deal breaker. Of course, at the time we had one bathroom with one sink for everyone!

  5. I was going to say one more thing about the double ovens... my parents have a free standing range that has a small side oven. It is really nice to have both when entertaining, but it doesn't take up the room of two large ovens. While coking in the larger one, you can heat bread or cook a side in the small side oven. Here is an example of one: http://www.lowes.com/pd_128032-2251-FPDF4085KF_0__?productId=3386500&Ntt=gas+range

  6. My husband and I also seem to migrate toward one sink (even though we have two) but I think some of these things are important for resale. We ended up with another formal dining room in current house that we MAY use once a year, but the "resale" word always looms. I could get by with just a big whopper shower, but know the jetted tub will hook some one with time to soak. I guess all of that goes out the window if you are in your "forever" home.

  7. I am going to essentially agree with Ryan and Sylvia's comment. I think two full ovens take up too much room (unless you have a huge kitchen) but I'm really a fan of split ovens with one regular sized oven and a smaller oven (stacked--usually on top) that is about the size of the drawer that's usually under a regular solo oven. I've only used an (electric) oven like this every once in a while (at the in-laws), but they seem so convenient. You can fit large things like a turkey in the bigger one while still having plenty of room for rolls, pies, casseroles or pretty much anything that's not tall in the smaller oven. The small oven seems to heat up in seconds, and you don't lose too much storage space!

  8. I live in NYC, so what is "normal" in the rest of America is not normal here! As a result, I think a lot of things are a bit over-the-top. Unless you have a very large family or entertain on a large scale constantly, I don't see the need for a double oven. (I would not need one myself.) I think if homes were more efficiently laid out, we wouldn't need all these giant McMansions.

As for my closet, I wouldn't care as long as I have enough room. I think my large reach-in closet is pretty luxurious after the tiny places I've lived.
I also think granite is really outdated already (although I do have a friend who has a gorgeous set of counters, but imo, 90% of the granite people choose is hideous). And though I love hardwood floors, I like cork floors in the kitchen, having had them in a place I lived previously.

Whew. I just spilled my design guts there.

    2. And just to add, I did buy a "regular" oven that can be divided so you can cook in two sections simultaneously. Plus, I have a microwave that doubles as a small convection oven. For my needs, that makes more sense.

  9. I had a utility sink installed in my garage (not the laundry room), and I love it! It's perfect for cleaning paintbrushes, washing the dog, cleaning camping gear or basically anything else too yucky to bring into the house! As far as double vanities, I'm with you totally. We have had double sinks in our last 3 houses, but for some reason we always end up using the same sink for everything. I would love the extra counter space instead. I do wonder if you might be able to have the plumber plumb for a 2nd sink (even though you aren't using it), so in the event you want to re-sell you could let potential buyers know that is already done. I think it would be relatively cheap during the building process, as opposed to adding it later!

  10. This was so interesting! My answers were all in the majority except for the double vanities which I think are only important if you both have to get ready at the same time in the morning, as well as the laundry sink which I only use to clean paint brushes. Our last home was the first time I had double wall ovens and they really are great when you're entertaining and need to cook/bake a few things at once. As for closets, my husband is a total closet hog so separate ones are vital! (in fact, he uses the spare bedroom as a dressing/ironing room and I use the main closet for myself!)

  11. Some are surprising and others not. We have had double sinks for 28 years in this house and use BOTH. We have double sinks in the new house too (moving this weekend). Don't have room for a laundry tub but will istall one in the basement. Closet space is not great (plus I have ALOT of clothes) so I will use master walk in and hubby a guest room closet. This was a great survey. BTW, do you use scatter rugs in the kitchen to protect against water? I plan to use one at the sink and by the fridge. XO, Pinky

  13. I can't believe that many people just HAVE to have double vanities in the bathroom...we just built our second home and again we opted for one sink. Only on Sunday mornings do we need the sink at the same time and it's not that big of a conundrum. Also because we didn't do the 2nd sink, I got an extra bank of drawers and I'd much rather have storage in the bathroom than another sink to clean. :)
