construction progress week 20

here's what's been happening around my new house this past week:

the cabinet boxes arrived. walking in and "seeing" the kitchen for the first time was pretty thrilling, i have to say!
once they are installed, the drawer and cabinet fronts will be added, and the crown molding will be put up.

the large tower to the right is the pantry. the open space next to it is where the fridge and freezer will be.

here is the cabinet box for the master bedroom...

doors and casings and trim started going up. this picture is of the cased opening going from the entry/living area into the master bedroom and powder room vestibule.

we (and by "we", i mean my husband and a friend of his!) installed the backer board for the tile.
this is the smaller upstairs bath....the bath that will mainly be used for my son.

this is the master bath...looking into the master bedroom.

here we are messing around with the tile layout for the master floor. i originally wanted to do  double herringbone, but we needed a tile that was longer than a 3" x 6", and it was going to blow our budget. instead, we will be using these 3 x 6 marble tiles from home depot that were much more affordable.

on the outside, the BIG news, of course, is that the house is PAINTED!!

here is the house with just the garage side painted... i was so surprised to see how quickly the house got painted! it really only took three days, including prep.

here is the house the following day....everything is painted except the side of the house you cant see...

the concrete sill that goes between the siding and the stone started going up as well...

a peek at the back of the house. you can see the concrete sill really well here.
i am really happy with "white dove" from benjamin moore. it is just what i wanted...a nice, soft slightly creamy white.

a close up view of the entry.
there will be a light on each of the pilasters, and another light on the ceiling of the recessed entry.
and here she is all painted!
we will still be adding shutters, landscaping, front steps, and eventually a window box or two. (arent window boxes dripping with flowers the BEST?)
there will also be a small (around 3-4 feet high) retaining wall right at the front sidewalk.
we still have a LOT of work to do on the back retaining wall...but it is all really coming along!
thanks for following along!

    1. its so surprising the way that colors look different from the inside of a house to the outside! some of the whites that look so soft and white on the inside looked so dark and creamy when placed outside! and YES---we are BIG fans of side loading garages. in the south, most non-starter homes have side loading garages, and we love the continuity it gives from the front elevation! plus---you can hide all your icky garage messes!

  5. Autumn your hard work is really paying off! It is just beautiful. Love the finishes you've picked. I can't believe there is snow on the ground and they were still able to paint the outside. Love the color, so fresh looking.

  10. OMG everything is REALLY coming together soooo beautifully. LOVE the kitchen! The exterior paint colors with the stone and the concrete ledge! I just LOVE everything! Was there anything you were nervous about right before it got installed that you thought maybe wasn't exactly what you were picturing in your head? I just had that with our lighting with our kitchen renovation and was wondering if you felt that during the building of this house?

    1. i wasn't 100% sold on the concrete ledge when my husband first brought it up, but i trust him so much that i knew if HE liked it, then it would work. i also had a hard time envisioning the changes he made to the pilasters around the front door, but i knew if he thought it would look good, then it WOULD look good....and it DID!
he is SO great with those exterior details, that i just nod my head and say YES to everything he dreams up! as far as the inside....no surprises yet. i have built so many houses that i do a pretty good jo of envisioning things...plus, i have my husband as back-up!

  16. I came across your blog a month ago and fell in love with the style of home you chose to build! I'm from ut but my family and i moved to the midwest for my husbands schooling. We bought our first home which was built in 1930. It has the cape cod feel. The whole house is stone and just charming. We are looking to move back west and i get sad thinking that i won't get my charming home. I love how you broke the ut "trend". You have great classic taste with a touch of personality. I have such a love for interior design and love to see how everyone finds their style. Beautiful home! Can't wait to see the finished product.

    1. thank you jill!! yes, we definitely broke the mold by building something not like any of the houses around us! both my husband and i are fans of traditional, southern architecture. we love those classic shapes and forms and think that they stand the test of time no matter what! we have had some of the neighbors make comments about how different the house from the rest of the houses in the neighborhood, and we take that as a compliment! :)
