laundry + mudroom PROGRESS

remember when i started this project? yeah..its been so long that even i ALMOST don't remember.
so, just to refresh our memories, here is the laundry and mudroom in my house.
small, but full of potential.

before:
no cabinets. no storage. no counter. just a lonely washer and dryer and a pretty cute striped floor.

another kooky panoramic view, standing in the laundry room:

from the garage entry, looking into the mudroom area:

AND>>>>an update...these spaces are still not done.
however, a lot of progress has been made.
the paneling up in the hallway. it still needs to be caulked and painted, and we need to install thicker baseboards to macth the thickness of the paneling. (long story---the carpenters put in paneling that was triple the thickness that we asked for, even thicker than our baseboards!! ugh. so now, we need to replace the baseboards with material that is the same crazy thickness)

the laundry room is well on its way to being done!
i installed the window shade, the cabinets and counter are in, and a new light was installed.

oh...and the hardware for this room is fantastic! i LOVE it, and get giddy whenever i open a cabinet.
(i  used the tolson hardware from rejuvenation)

isn't it yummy?

the counters are a honed black granite.

the light is from west elm.

the mudroom cabinets are in...after being made WRONG twice.
the storage here has transformed my life! i love it!

the drawer fronts are a metal mesh, and the long leather wrapped hardware is a nice textural addition.
all the paneling needs to be caulked, sanded and painted.
after that happens, i can install the wallpaper on the ceiling and install the new lights.

i will also get some glass transoms made, which will add even more character to this tiny space.

SO, there you have it!
a little peek at the progress of the laundry and mudroom. i am not sure when this space will be TOTALLY finished, but when it is, i will be thrilled to share it with you!

one room challenge week 2: the plan

week 2 of the one room challenge is underway. i am making some progress on decisions.

now that i have committed to getting this area done in the next few weeks, i have been getting nervous about getting the cabinets made and installed. no kidding---i have emailed my cabinet fabricator 4 times in the last 5 days. i think he gets the hint that i am READY for those drawings.
i still don't have them yet, and i feel like i am sprouting grey hairs waiting around...

anyway.
here is the design plan for the area:

i love to pull together these plans for clients, and always make one for rooms i am designing in my own home. for me, having a visual guide for a room helps me finalize finishing touches, and motivates me to complete the project!

the mudroom PLAN:

*add a seating/storage built-in (the longer leather pulls will be installed on the lower drawers, and the leather pulls will be on the upper cabinets)

*add planking. i am considering a "random" look to the panels.

*adding grasscloth to the ceiling. i scored some ralph lauren herringbone grasscloth wallpaper about year ago on ebay, and i am hoping i have enough!

* adding some art. still up in the air about size, style, color...

*adding shelling to the closet, along with the bird wallpaper. i have been in love with that wallpaper for a while, and i like the idea of getting a little rush of happiness when i open that cam closet.

laundry room PLAN:

*add cabinets with some great hardware

*add counter. i am hoping to find a rem ant of a black veined marble, but i will settle for some honed absolute black granite.

*install a backsplash. this might be one of the items that doesn't happen happen due to time and money.

*add a roman shade

*install some trim to the ceiling in an "x" detail

*get a new light.

if anyone want my cabinet guys email, so that you TOO can bug him about getting those drawings to me, let me know! he might need a little more email motivation! ha! i'm only kidding. (or AM i?)

you can see pictures of the space in my week 1 post here

one room challenge REVEAL: teen bedroom with striped cork + chalkboard wall

i'm so excited to show you my teenage daughters finished room!!

(all images by sara boulter photography... at least, the pretty ones!)

i have loved being a part of these challenges over the last three rounds. i have finished two other rooms in my house thanks to linda at calling it home and the one room challenge. she has done so much work behind the scenes and does an amazing job of promoting EVERYONE who participates in the challenge. bravo, linda! hundreds of pretty, finished rooms around the country applaud you!

if you are new to my blog, and this room design, you follow along with my progress, here:
week 1
week 2
week 3
week 4
week 5

just a reminder---here is what i started with:

there was nothing really "wrong" with this room, but it definitely didn't feel welcoming or cohesive, and didn't reflect the young lady that olivia has become in the last couple of years. it had just about zero personality, and some of the furniture were cast offs from other rooms. plus, the light fixture in the room stopped working about 8 months ago, and there weren't even any blinds on the windows!

there was no place for her to hang out with her friends, and she had taken over the back wall by pinning some posters on it. instead of fighting her *need to plaster the wall with stuff she likes, we decided to embrace it with a striped wall of cork and chalkboard.

one of the elements of the design that i am most proud about is that i DID NOT PURCHASE ANY NEW furniture for this room makeover!  i already had every single item in my house! i actually already had the new light fixture and the swing arm sconce as well, and chose to use them in here instead of where i originally planned them to go.

i have had the vintage chairs and lamps for several years. i fell in love with the chairs when i spotted them at a thrift store about 5 years ago (for $30 each), and snagged the lamps at a consignment store about 3 years ago. (i believe i paid $75 for the pair) i have been meaning to revamp both of them for a while now, and this room makeover was JUST the incentive i needed!

my daughter is less than a week away from turning 16, and she is pretty thrilled with the new look of her room. (happy birthday sweetie!) she was very involved in the design...she chose all of the fabrics and art (with a little preselection by me FIRST, of course), and i worked with her on all of the details of the space.
a few of her loves:
-reading
-stars/constellations
-blue
-guitar + music
-tennis
-the beach
-learning to drive
-sushi, and all things asian
-the obvious teenage girl stuff--boys, her friends, funny you tube videos, instagram, netflix.

enjoy!
(all sources are listed at the end of the post)

the chest was brought up from our foyer, and new hardware was added.

the vintage lamps were rewired and custom shades were made. (check out week 3, and see how i pulled this off.)

new hardware makes all the difference on this white chest.

the new curtains are made from the same fabric as the bedskirt and shams, to keep a calmness and continuity to the room. i usually love mixing tons of different patterns when i design kids rooms, but i wanted her room to feel just a little more grown up.
the bottom and top are banded in a stripe fabric from premier prints. they have blackout lining, so when olivia wants to sleep in, she can!

the pillow was a bit of a splurge, but out of all of the fabrics that i showed olivia for the "front and center bed pillow", this was the ONLY one she loved at first sight. DONE.

the new light fixture, from overstock. i was struggling with wanting something a bit more "WOW", but kept this one due to budget, and i am glad i did.

and now...for THE WALL!

we painted the chalkboard stripes first, and then added the cork. the cork was purchased at a craft store, and came in 4' rolls. we bought 6 rolls for the two stripes. and mounted it with contact cement. yah.
contact cement.
the good?
that cork isn't going anywhere.
the bad? that cork isn't going anywhere.
we figured the walls were going to get damaged with the amount of pinning that is going on here anyway, and when olivia grows up and moves out, we will strip the cork off the wall and repair it.

she LOVES, loves, loves this wall. and so do her friends...she had a few over the other night, and there was a LOT of drawing and giggling going on. exactly what we wanted!
i am looking forward to seeing every single inch of it covered with whatever crazy stuff she wants pin or write on it!

the new seating area is a place for her to hang out with friends, read, or practice the guitar.

the revamped vintage chairs are amazing! i am so happy with how they turned out!

the fabric on the back of the chairs is the same as the stripes in the curtains.

thanks for stopping by!!
