coastal living ultimate beach house

i spent some time this weekend (but not nearly enough) curled up in bed reading some of the magazines that came in a huge stack that completely filled my mailbox. *i guess the mailman finally figured out where i live!
one spread that really caught my eye was coastal living's new beach house in norfolk virginia. the interior design is by phoebe howard, and the architectural designer is jim, phoebe's husband. they are an
amazing team, and always create layered, classic homes that exude warmth.

here are my favorite images:

i love classic architecture. this house has some great details that i really like...the shakes, the "real" shutters, and the metal roof.

i had already seen this image on pinterest, and was excited to see where it came from. those
yellow chairs are so HAPPY...and did you notice that the welting on the banquette cushions are also
done in yellow?

what i love about this room:
the wide plank flooring. the great wood ceilings. the laid back vibe. that huge art piece over the mantle.
those blue striped chairs.
i really like the wide striped on the banquette and the oars that are used surrounding the mirror. (what a great idea...it says "coastal" without being over the top.)

i love the symettery here, and the fact that while is is balanced, it is a little "off center" from what one might normally expect....see how the art above the night stands is not centered directly over the night stands, but is off center from them?

th angled panels in the cabinet doors add a lot of texture and whimsy.

check out the tile floors! a hexagonal tile is a true classic, and i love how the scale of these tiles has been exaggerated. it's still classic, but has a modern feel as well.

this room was so beautiful in the magazine spread....there are so many great details that get lost in this smaller image. what really had me stopping and staring was the window treatments! such great details...and it almost looks like the fabric was adhered to some type of molding at the very top...i know-SUPER hard to see from this picture!
and just as hard to see in this picture.
isn't that mirror great? and that fabric on the headboard, sofa and chair is gorgeous!

love the melon and beige color scheme. i am thinking of using these colors, plus a soft yellow, in my daughter charlottes room.

who wouldn't want to sit out here? i am a sucker for little courtyards. and this one is just about perfect.

  1. I love that beige and coral room as well. Really warm & welcoming.

Those round mirrors in the green bedroom look like portholes - another nautical reference without being a theme.
