one room challenge week 1-gradys grown up bedroom

oh boy. *deep breath!

it's me. i'm baaaaaaaack!

how in the world did a week become 5 months? YIKES!

(by the way--thank you to all those who emailed me and messaged me on instagram about my...um...absence!
i did not plan to take such a long break, but i must admit that it was a bit therapeutic.
i HAVE been posting about all of my projects on instagram, so if you follow me, then you know that i have been as busy as ever.)

i am still NOT finished with my previous one room challenge space, my laundry room and mudroom. we had some major issues with the fabrication and installation of the cabinets, as well as the paneling. we are still dealing with a few details on some of the issues, which are holding us up from completion.
ugh. i dont even want to think about it. it has been so frustrating.

however, i am going to go out on a limb and promise that i will have not only the laundry room and mudroom but gradys room as well!
so...two reveals for the price of one? not bad, huh? *even if ONE of those reveals is 6 months late!

OK!! onto the good stuff.
for this round of the one room challenge, i am "officially" working on my son gradys room. he recently turned 12 and is super excited and opinionated about his bedroom.

here it is before:

for previous rounds, i transformed my teenage daughters bedroom:
(gradys room is actually a mirror of this room! same size, same everything.)

it started as this:
(you can  see more pictures of this project here)

in another previous round, i worked on my daughter charlottes room:

which  started out like this:

(you can read more about this project here)

as well as my mini office:

gradys room is a complete BORE right now. yuck. i am falling asleep just looking at it!

it is a large bedroom, which is wonderful, but everything in his room is too small for his current needs. he has sleeping in the same bed since he was 3.

now that grady is 12, and has some thoughts on his new bedroom.

he wants his walls BLACK.
i know, i know. black walls.
trendy.
overdone.
everyones "sick to death" of seeing them.
but guess what?
i'm not.
and apparently, neither is my little man.

so, black walls it is!

other than that, i know i will be using a dresser that i scored from a sale at down east  last year for $240.

he definitely needs a bigger bed! i purchased this bed on clearance at jc penny over two years ago, and it has been sitting in my garage, just waiting for this moment. (i am glad that i bought it when i did, as it is no longer available.)

i know that i want to keep the room feeling simple and masculine. grady also wants a place to play video games in his room, so there will be a desk as well as a comfy chair to sit at.

i am thinking of using the herman miller aeron chair that we have had forever. i bought it as a college graduation gift for my husband, almost 17 years ago. (at the time, i was working for a design firm that specialized in systems furniture and owned the reproduction rights to herman millers designs, and so i got a great discount on it!)

i will keep the overhead light fixture, (the z gallerie sputnik chandelier), his table lamp and the nightstand, but will most likely try to paint or update the night stand in some way.

anyway...
i hope you will forgive me for completely checking out and disappearing from my blog for several months. it was actually good for me to "get away" for a while. and while disappearing in the middle of a project is SO LAME, the absence has refreshed me and i am ready to share with you all the things that i have been working on for the last few months!

lets DO this!

design plan: narrow master bedroom in need of storage

i love it when clients are up for a little dose of something different in their spaces! this client requested a small pop of bright pink or fuchsia, more storage and a calming, updated feel in her master bedroom.

the narrow room has an insane amount of doors, as well as a wall full of windows that left only one possible wall for the bed, and only a 3' wide space for any other piece of furniture.

musts:
keeping the king size bed,
adding storage,
taming the wall of windows
and staying on a tight budget.

here is the design plan i came up with:

(this consultation was a phone call + pinterest board with an added design board.)

coastal e-design: ocean winds villa, part 3

i was able to see this project in person for the first time last week, and it was pretty exciting!
(to see the post on part 1 of this project, click here. to see part 2 of this project click here)

my parents and i spent a few days making some minor changes and adding the last layers to the space. minor changes included rotating and shifting rugs, moving around some art pieces, and adding pillows and accessories.

the overall feel of the bedrooms was influenced by the art that my parents wanted to use in each space. the art that was selected for the guest bedroom is brighter and a bit more "fun", while the master bedroom has a more sophisticated, muted feel.

after a LOT of talking and planning, here are the design plans for the 3 sleeping areas:

i will be posting some "after" pictures i took of this project shortly!

and, just to prove that it always looks worse before it looks better, here are some during shots of the work that has been happening at the vila over the last few months:

the biggest change was removing the upper cabinets in the kitchen:
going....

GONE!

the light fixture was replaced.

and all of the furniture and housewares brought in.

the kitchen cabinets before they were painted:

and lots of stuff was unpacked and put in place!

next week i will be sharing the after pictures!
stay tuned.

week 5

we have moved 3 times in the last 6 years. each time we moved, i would tell my daughter, charlotte, that i would decorate her room...and i never did.
something always got in the way. money, time, and the fact that we were renting made keeping my promise next to impossible.

when we moved into our new home about 17 months ago, i once again, promised charlotte that her room would be among the first rooms we worked on. i have since finished gradys bathroom, the girls upstairs bathroom, and my office,  and have received some "NUDGING" from charlotte that it was time to work on her room.

the timing for this project worked out perfectly too---since she is an official teenager as of last saturday! happy 13th birthday to my little cutie! thanks for your patience!

anyway, enough blabbing.
lets get to the amazing AFTER pictures, taken by the talented sara boulter!

i worked with charlotte on every detail of her room....from the color scheme, to the accessories, to the sheets on the bed. i wanted the room to be a place filled with things that she loves. this room truly is a room that is HER...youthful, FUN, a bit whimsical and spirited, yet ordered.

the color scheme we chose was inspired from these still life paint by numbers that my grandmother gave me before she passed away. i was intrigued by the mix of neutral tones with splashes of coral and mustard. at first, i was planning on using coral with mustard as the main color scheme, but after looking at fabric samples, it was clear that charlotte gravitated towards softer, peachier tones.

charlotte is a jewelry freak. she loves her earrings and necklaces! the acrylic earring organizers, ceramic containers and metal jewelry tree give her a grown up, chic way to display her treasures.

new knobs and a fresh coat of paint freshen up this hand me down dresser that we have had for years.

a favorite family phrase, coined by my husband was stenciled onto some plain mat board and put in an ikea ribba frame.

the acrylic cubes hold favorite souvenirs from trips to the beach.
the handprint was molded when charlotte was1 year old. (sniff* sniff*)

the oversize cork board was made with a $10 frame, some fabric and a sheet of sound board from the hardware store. (tutorial coming soon)

the desk is from target. i removed the legs and replaced them with some metal ones, and painted the drawer fronts. the chair is vintage, reupholstered in a velvet that i found on etsy.

the nightstand is from ikea. the robert abbey brass wall sconces were purchased on ebay for a fraction of the retail price.

the bed is the brimnes daybed from ikea. we added side boards and a headboard, with a pagoda-inspired headboard to totally transform it.
(and and when i say "we" i mean my husband allen---he jokingly suggested that i should rename the one room challenge the one room chaALLENge!)

the canopy was hung from the ceiling for maximum drama. "we" installed a cleat/board on the ceiling...the curtain hardware for the side panels was mounted to it, and the valance was velcro-ed on the front. the sheers are hung from a tension rod, mounted between the two side of the valance boards. (tutorial coming)

the tie backs were crafted from 3 hardware store elements..chain that was spray painted, a brass wall hook and a brass clasp.

this nightstand is the lack coffee table, also from ikea.

new adjustable pulls really help disguise the ikea daybed!

the bookcase was custom built, and hold a little surprise behind it. the painting above it was done by my mother.

it swings open to reveal a secret little hideout!

the metal birds add a whimsical touch.

hope you enjoyed the tour!
