lamps in the kitchen?

i spotted this kitchen in the january 2011 issue of atlanta homes + lifestyles, and rediscovered
it last night while sifting through some of my magazines. it was of course, the lamps that caught
my eye...lamps in the kitchen are not something we see very often. what do you think about this look?
would you ever put a lamp in your kitchen?

  1. While the lamps look pretty, to me they look staged. It seems as though in real life, lamps would get in the way on an island. Not only would you have to work around them but also see around them. Unless they're battery operated, there would be cords trailing from them to the plug. So I guess, for me, lamps seem a little impractical unless they're on the perimeter of the kitchen.

  2. this is a definite yes. i think it's so classy and adds a warm light that fixtures can't really pull off. it's like the undercabinet lighting but cooler. if you have space for one, i think it's a great idea. =)

  3. I like the look of the lamps, they give the kitchen a more furniture-like styling. And then you could change the look of your kitchen by switching out the lamps with a different statement colour.
I don't know that I would use them in my own kitchen though. I prefer the look of pendant fixtures hanging over the island or the sink like jewelry.

  4. i totally agree that i love the LOOK, but i would not do this in my own kitchen....in fact, when i see this picture, my first thought is "ooooo, pretty!", and my second thought is "great...something ELSE to clean."

  5. Not in "love" with them on the island... but think in the right kitchen, in the right place, it could work.

...and agreeing with autumn... one spatter of spaghetti sauce and I'd be over it!

  6. I love the look, but am I the only one envisioning my kids greasy cookie-dough splattered on those silk shades? I have noticed Ina Garten incorporates lamps in her kitchens (I especially love her "barn kitchen" in the Hamptons) and she mentions they are hardwired. Again, love the look, and the ambient lighting would be beautiful for parties, but one more thing to keep clean!

  7. I like the look but I know with splatters and steam, the shades are impractical. Great stone on the island.

  8. There's not a room in my house that doesn't have lamps...including my kitchen and bathrooms! I love the ambiance they give off at night, so cozy and welcoming.

  10. I think in some parts of the kitchen they could work, such as on a side bench or little office spot or similar. But I can't imagine them working on a kitchen island like they show here - I like having a clean bench space for working on and this would drive me crazy!

  13. I think anything goes when it comes to decor, but this kitchen doesn't really look like a kitchen. It looks like a movie set. Don't get me wrong it gorgeous and if you didn't have kids, perfection, but not realistic. But overall, I'd say try out the lamps in the kitchen why not!

  14. I have one right beside my sink. Not one as large as the ones on this island, but a tall thin one with a small shade. It was a gift from my husband's grandmother. I love it so much.

  15. I vote yes for lamps within the kitchen. Even though I decorate on the more formal side, I think one lamp works a little bit better and would probably feel more casual.

  16. My first thought was "Where are the chords?" I do think they look pretty but maybe not practical, the whole water and electricity thing, lol! What does attract me is the scale of the lamps.

  17. While it may work for aesthetics, it does not work for functionality. Good design does both.
