but i am.
typically, we would opt for a custom wood door, but we are going to go with fiberglass, because we need something that will withstand the intense heat of the western sun. my husband has had a lot of experience with wood doors, and they don't do well when painted a dark color and when they face either south or west.
the front of our house will face due west, and since we are so high on the bench of the mountain, we are going to get blasted by the sun. i know i want something pretty simple, with the windows on the top, but i can't decide which window pattern to go with. i kinda like them all.
which one is your favorite?
2 panes
3 panes
4 panes
6 panes
please leave a comment! there are some things that i have really strong opinions on, and others that
i just can't seem to decide on. this is one of them!
(another great source to look for doors is sliding doors @ www.barrier-components.co.uk.)
here is the elevation of the house, for reference:
I like the 2 or 4 panes- are your windows going to be similar to the windows on the rendering? Good luck! Thanks for sharing your progress- it's fun to see!
ReplyDeleteI tend to like odd numbers. So, I actually like the three pane one. And it doesn't look all that traditional. But, to go along with the lines (windows) of the house, the four pane one would probably look best.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite hands down is the 3 windows. I have it. But I also have 6/1 windows flanking it, so there are 3 panes across in both the windows and door.
ReplyDeleteIf your windows are identical to the rendering (4/1), then I would probably go with the 2 windows or 4 windows for consistency across the front of the house.
Also, we did our windows in reeded glass in the door and in our kitchen cabinets. It looks amazing and offers a little more privacy at the front door while still letting all of the light in. I highly recommend. We get nonstop compliments on the door!
I like the four pane door, like your windows. For something a little different, I'd go for the six pane.
ReplyDeleteI like the two panes. I feel like the 4 or 6 panes would be too similar to the windows and the three panes wouldn't have the same 'rhythm'.
ReplyDeleteI like the 3 against 2 pattern of the 3 and 6 pane windows. I think I would choose the 3 over the 6 because there would be fewer panes to clean!
ReplyDeleteI love the 3 panes! But I have to agree with Monika's insight about which windows will be flanking the door.
ReplyDeleteI love the first one, it is just a little different from the other doors that way.... Autumn, is this your house you are building... I have to know. (we need to get together and have lunch sometime)
ReplyDeleteyes! finally! can you believe it?
Deletethanks for all the comments so far!
ReplyDeletethe windows will look just like the ones in the rendering.
i have t admit that i am leaning towards the 3 pane door, but totally get what is being said about being consistent, and opting for the 2 or 4 panes.
we will have some type of textured glass in the windows, even though the door will be 8' tall and privacy should not be an issue....
keep those votes coming!!
:)
The 4 panes will mimic your windows.

The 2 speaks to me, and i don't know why. Good luck!
ReplyDelete3 panes
ReplyDeleteI love odd numbers too-3 is my vote. :o) Good luck.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of a unique profile for a front door, so that would nix 4 panes. Two panes seems awkward. Three panes seems a bit like security bars. I like 6 panes! :-) Second choice would be the conforming four panes.
ReplyDeleteLove the 2 pane and think it would look FAB with your windows.
ReplyDeleteGo with the one that has pane width and heigth closest to the pane size of your other windows.
ReplyDeleteI like the 4 or 6 pane
ReplyDeleteNOT the 2 or 6. If the windows are 4 panes like the rendering, the 4 will keep it all in balance and the 3 will add some contrast. The 6 is too busy and the 2 doesn't suit the house.
ReplyDelete4 pane!
ReplyDeleteI like the contrast of the 3 and 6 panes, but I think cleaning the 6 pane would be a "pain"!
ReplyDeleteI like the 4 pane the most, followed by the 6 pane. The other ones look like jail windows to me--probably because they lack the cross bar!
ReplyDelete4 panes! (But they all look good, so I don't think you can go wrong!).
ReplyDelete4 panes would be too similar to the windows on the house; 6 panes too busy; 3 panes feels odd; I think 2 panes is the best option.
ReplyDeleteI think the 4 pane is a winner! (but go with your instinct...you have wonderful taste).
ReplyDeleteMy first choice would be the 3 (2nd would be 6) I think the odd just looks right.
ReplyDeleteThe 6 panes create a smaller glass area for each pane and breaks up the horizontal look nicely; all would look very nice, however
ReplyDeleteSince the elevation drawing shows windows with four panes you could go w/ four panes in the door for continuity. But my favorite of your choices is the one w/ six panes. Good luck! And thanks for sharing your process ... it's going to be fun to watch as you move along.
ReplyDeletehmmm tough choice!!! i like either the 2 pane or 6 pane...2 pane would be easier to clean...
ReplyDeleteI am all about consistency and choosing a door that mimics the design of the windows would work really well. I would go with 4 panes. By the way, I had a similar type fibreglass door that we had stained to give it a wood look. It was great and definitely held up well with the direct sunlight and heat during the day! Good luck with everything!

I feel like the doors are sort of craftsman style for your traditional home. Any other options?
ReplyDeleteI like 2 b/c I think the size would mimic your window muntin squares. I like it when the square glass opening sizes are somewhat consistent on the front elevation. If you go 4, the scale would be much smaller than your windows, I think. Funny we just got a custom wood door put in facing south, painted medium-dark green. It is not doing well, and our contractor is going to now replace it. Clearly our contractor does not have the experience of your hubby :)
ReplyDeleteI say get what you like. The windows on either side balance each other so I say any one would work.
ReplyDelete3 panes. For sure.
ReplyDeletekeep those comments coming! i appreciate the all.
ReplyDeletethank you!
The 3 paned one looks most balanced to me so it gets my vote! Door 1 is too simple. 4 panes looks like a kindergartener's drawing of a front door (haha!) and 5 seems too busy and I don't like how it's mixing 2 different styles; top half feels very colonial while the bottom half is very craftsmen.
ReplyDeleteHope that helps!

2 panes!
ReplyDeleteI vote the 6 paned door. I had a door just like that in my last new construction and I loved it!
ReplyDelete4 panes!
ReplyDeleteNone of the doors you show are really close to the architect's drawing - which I thought was perfect. If these are your only choices, I would go with the two pane. We have a fiberglass door in our Texas house which gets direct sun all afternoon, and although I hated it when we bought the house and wanted to replace it, the fact that it is so indestructible won me over.
ReplyDeletemy vote would be for 2 or 6 panes
ReplyDeleteTHREE panes! I like the artistic balance you get from odd numbers. Beautiful door! :)
ReplyDeleteI'd have them match the windows! :)
ReplyDeletethe 6 panel
ReplyDeleteIMHO I don't think the mission style door goes with the rest of the house.
ReplyDelete3 panes
ReplyDelete6 panes. Goes with the look of the house best.
ReplyDelete3 panes.
ReplyDeleteI like the simplicity of the 2 or 3 pane door. It complements just enough without detracting from the overall character of the house. You can add boldness with color if you choose.
ReplyDeleteI like 2 panes.
ReplyDeleteI love multiples of 3, so I vote for the 3 pane or 6 pane! Beautiful!
ReplyDelete6 panes - I have this one on my side door stained a beautiful deep honey tone and we get tons of compliments on it. We have the 2 pane one in the front of the house, but the 6 pane one is the one that everyone loves. Very classy.
ReplyDelete4 panes - to match the windows (if they will stay the same design).
ReplyDeleteI agree with the above posters that the mission style door really does not work for me with the rest of the design elements.
